Smart Apples and Traditional Oranges

″The last time I needed a moon-phase display was during my family reunion at Transylvania″

A lot has been said on the old wristwatch/ smart watch/ smart phone dilemma. So I thought it was time to give my two cents.

Let’s be clear. I’m only referring to fashion watches – the targeted category by the advent of ‘smart everything’. Here is the big question: Why are we still trying to compare apples and oranges?

Watches were never just about time-keeping. Remember all those sub dials? Those are ‘complications’ – functions of a watch like a chronograph (stop watch capabilities) or moon phase (tell the current phase of the moon in the sky). Let me be honest. The last time I needed a moon-phase display was during my family reunion at Transylvania.

We never debated the death of chronographs with the advent of digital stop watches. Simply because except for the rare few we have been buying watches for reasons other than time keeping. Reasons are plenty – jewellery, pride, personality, professionalism or simply art.

So let’s quit the debate, stop quoting silly sayings like “boys look at their smartphones and men look at their watches to check the time” and just accept the fact we love these lttle keepers of time because they’re pure expression.
